Lamon Manuel
Lamon Manuel is an independent rap artist from the Southside of Chicago, and founding member of the prolific rap brotherhoods Tomorrow Kings and FUTURE CULT LEADERS of AMERICA (FCLA).
Manuel is a writer’s writer whose art is a campaign for personhood, aiming to break the presumed rap binary: “positive, conscious rap” or “gangsta rap.” His sad-boy-adult-angst, smart-rap style is imaginative, humorous, richly poetic and is marked by gratuitous film and literary references.
Contrary to the performance-artist paradigm of accepting the sacrifice of writing for song beats and/or performance, Lamon Manuel has perfected a recording and performance style that is just as captivating as his writing. His beat taste is perfectly congruent to his writing style and larger than life performance.
Driven by the idea that any performance could be one’s last, Manuel melds rapping and an element of theater to performance to deliver an unforgettable experience for every crowd.
Manuel recently described his work as “a series of choreographed panic attacks when played forward.” Padded beneath lush imagery, Manuel’s work presents as vulnerable. He invites an intimate look into topics typically cloaked in silence, such as Black mental health, the dissonance between non-Black fan enjoyment of Black art and real life engagement with Black people, substance and sexual abuse, body image issues, experiences in love from the Black male perspective, family dynamics, and male privilege

DOLL FOOD
DOLL FOOD is a sound and voice project. Tape released on Not Not Fun Records in 2014. She will be performing all new sounds.

Church Fire
One of Denver’s most riveting live acts, electronic noisepop duo church fire has “refined glitchy, experimental synth pop into something darker – still playful, but seething with bombastic energy. [They] masterfully straddle the line between noisy experimentalism and accessible songwriting…an inspired and confrontational vocalist [throws] herself fearlessly into every performance with an intensity and theatrical flair that is at once funny, scary and uncompromising.” -Westword’s Critic’s Choice.
Described by 303 Magazine as “an entrancing electronic exorcism,” Shannon Webber and David Samuelson make up a “dramatic music force that you can only begin to understand after seeing church fire perform live.”
church fire’s unique approach to witch house/dance music and their undeniable punk aesthetic make them a versatile fit on any bill. Their latest full length album, pussy blood, was released by MC Sole (Anticon) on his Denver label Black Box Tapes.

Mirror Fears
Mirror Fears is the dark ambient beat-driven solo project of Kate Warner, based in Denver, CO. Described as experimental synth-pop and avant-garde electronica, Mirror Fears draws upon the minimalist approach of XX, the lush textures of M83, and the harshness of Gazelle Twin. She will be touring the South and Midwest with her new full-length album Eaten, out in October 2017 on the new Denver label Abstract Without Abstraction.
"Mirror Fears ventures into territory blazed by Swedish duo The Knife, posing some heady ideas in the guise of gloomy dance production and displaced beats." -Matthew Stieb, San Antonio Current
"...shimmering, downtempo melodies brightened by moments of tonal incandescence" -Tom Murphy, Denver Westword

Ten x Ten 2017: Dual Practices

Homeroom, Spudnik Press, and Experimental Sound Studio are thrilled to annouce Ten x Ten 2017: Dual Practices.

The fifth and most conceptually broad iteration of Ten x Ten, ‘Ten x Ten 2017: Dual Practices’ brings together 10 notable Chicago artists who have robust practices in both visual art and music. By considering questions about boundaries and location, Ten x Ten 2017 will investigate Chicago neighborhood identities, urban change, and comfort in space and place.

Five artist pairs have been collaborating over several months to each create a two-part work that includes a song or audio piece and an 18” x 18” screen print. The results of these partnerships will be released with a concert and gallery exhibition at Experimental Sound Studio on Saturday, September 9th. The artists will perform excerpts from their collaborations and display their prints as well as other work.

Featured artists pairs for Ten x Ten Dual Practices are:

Melina Ausikaitis / Ambrosia Bartošekulva
Mark Booth / Deidre Huckabay
Cathy Hsiao / Damon Locks
Lou Mallozzi / Joseph Clayton Mills
Allen Moore / Sadie Woods

Tickets and a collectible cassette compilation of the artist pairs' musical work can be reserved in advanced at https://ess.org/esscalendar/2017/7/25/ten-x-ten-2017-dual-practices-prints-and-record-release

Ten x Ten is made possible with generous support from Circle Salon. and Cushing Co.

Thirst for Light iv

"Arise, Oh Sun! for the longest day
Winter's last breath has faded away
Come, Rejoice to the glorious sound
Let us dance the circle round
Thirsting for light as darkness ends
Gather as strangers, leave as friends."

Three days of music, camping, swimming, plant-walks, archery, feasting, fire, and honoring our ancestors under the same rising sun they once looked upon before us.

SANCTUARY Closing Dialogue

The / SANCTUARY / art exhibit has had a home here at the Gender and Sexuality Center for the past weeks, and we're giving it a proper send off! Come to the GSC for a special closing presentation, including the voices of several artists featured in the exhibit.

/ SANCTUARY / explores issues of community safefy and support in the face of renewed legal, political and systemic violence, with a focus on the work and voices of sex workers and undocumented folks. Artists and community members Carolina Gallo and Ambrosia Bartosekulva will speak on their participation in the art show, and students Tyler Dean Hamlin and LuLú Martinez will give short presentations of the oral history projects they have been working on, in relation to the sanctuary movement.

We hope that you will join us for an informative and powerful evening. Food will be served at 4:30pm and the speakers will begin at 5pm. See you there!
